The Double Agent: Soluble HLA as a Master Regulator of Immunity

HLA_pocket

High amounts of soluble HLA complexes circulate our body, with potential to serve as biomarkers. But what is their function?

Previously, nanoparticle-conjugated HLA complexes were demonstrated to dampen the immune system, curing mice from autoimmunity.
In this recent work, in the journal cancers, the authors demonstrate that certain HLA complexes can differentiate monocytes into more M1 like (pro-inflammatory) phenotype and activates T and NK cells, thereby activating anti-cancer immunity.

Is this immune-modulation a more general function of blood-soluble HLA complexes?
